Cosmetic Ophthalmology
The skin is the largest human organ and has a number of important functions. The skin not only gives us our appearance and shape, it also serves other important functions such as protecting the body from the environment, preventing excessive water loss from the body and protecting the body from infection
As we age, the quality of the skin changes. Collagen and elastin fibres are degraded, and the quality of the body’s own hyaluronic acid is reduced. This results in decreased skin elasticity, increased roughness and dryness of the skin. This is partly due to intrinsic factors that are difficult to change, such as our individual genetic code and the biological clock. There are, however, extrinsic or lifestyle factors which we all can control to a certain degree to reduce skin ageing.
Wrinkles around the eyes tend to make you look tired or older than you feel. They too can be caused by sun exposure, smoking and aging changes. Wrinkles around the eyes and face may be dynamic (change with smiling) or static (constantly present). We can improve dynamic changes with injections of Botox™ while static wrinkles can be improved with fillers.
Cosmetic Opthalmology can “turn back time” by reducing the appearance of wrinkles and lines, sun damage and sagging skin that can make your eyes look angry, sad or tired. We use BOTOX® injections and Filler materials.
Injectable fillers and Botox are often administered in a surgeon’s office and usually take no more than thirty minutes to complete. Some injectables will require multiple treatments spaced several weeks apart. A local or topical anesthetic or numbing agent may be administered before the filler is injected with a small needle beneath the skin of the treatment area.
